The Colosseum is a World Heritage site so it does not have dining options within its walls. You are able to bring in water and food, although it will need to pass through security. While it is possible to consume your snacks during your visit, there are limited places to stop and dine.

You will want to bring a water bottle, however, as it's tiring to explore the massive grounds. In the heat of the day during the summer months, you can easily become dehydrated. There are also several fountains where you can fill your water bottle along the way.

• Visitors should take note that it is strictly forbidden to damage or remove any archaeological material, write on the artefacts or walls, or light fires. Each of these carries fines and jail time.
• It's wise to wear comfortable and supportive athletic shoes when exploring the Colosseum as the historic walking paths are uneven, rocky, and there are many steep steps. Weather conditions differ depending on what time of year you visit, but during peak summer season it gets extremely hot. It's advisable to wear a hat to help shield you from the sun.
• In terms of the best time of day to visit, the earlier in the day the better. Crowds will be a bit thinner and it won't be as hot.
